Leading is a big role to fill. It can feel very heavy sometimes especially if you are leading a business with a team. Not only are you responsible for the financial success of the business, but the safety and happiness of your team culture, as well as the satisfaction of the guests. That’s A LOT of people that you are responsible and caring for. Lastly, we can’t forget to lead ourselves either. You are solely responsible for watching over yourself and making sure you are good, healthy, inspired and fulfilled.

As leaders, you are not always going to get it right. That’s not the point of being in this role.

Leadership is building trust and respect within yourself and then your community. And in order to build trust, open communication and asking for feedback is imperative.

There is a previous article on how to ask for feedback that you can refer back to for additional tools and resources on this. But here, I want to talk about feedback on your performance and communication skills within your team. Asking our colleagues for areas in which they feel you shine and some areas in which you didn’t get it right is scary and intimidating, and it also is insanely impactful.

Asking for your colleagues' experience with your leadership voice helps everyone grow. It’s the bridge to strong communication channels. It also is a direct source of information for you to receive, process, analyze and then act on. Now, not all feedback is necessary for us to take into account. Some of it can be received with a thank you and then it gets put in a box and stays there. But a lot of times, the feedback shared is really helpful and if you sit with it long enough, and REALLY listen to what your team is sharing with you, you can evolve in a big way that will affect all of those that cross your path.

I’ll give you a personal example that has forever marked my career and a professional partnership with a colleague and will also share a script and questions that you use to ask your colleagues for feedback on your leadership voice.
