Feeling stuck in your role and don't know how to safely take a leap into a new career move?
This is my favorite question recently: “What guidance do you have on taking the leap out of a current role and into one that is so outside of our comfort zone?”
“Kim, How did you take the leap?”
I’ve been asked this a lot recently. And as a generator in human design and a forever student of life, I am constantly leaping from one mountain top down to a valley and back up to the next uphill climb to a peak with stunning views. I take calculated risks and never encourage anyone to take a leap without having a full safety net and doing their research first.
Taking a leap is really scary! Don’t get me wrong. I am terrified each time I do it. And it also allows me to discover the leader I’m proud to be and evolve into the more aligned and compassionate human I consistently show up as.
When you’re feeling the itch to take a leap, this is your internal system asking you kindly to get more aligned with yourself. You want to be more passionate, excited and inspired than where you are sitting right now. It’s also telling you that you are in a comfortable place and you already have all the tools and resources to move into a new space and grow. What a powerful message!
And as my mother always tells me “humans don’t like change.” This is a very true statement. We don’t like change because it’s uncomfortable and new. Because we have to start from the beginner’s seat and expand our palate. Starting a new journey is intimidating and creates a lot of stories within that make us insecure and resist taking the leap. It also forces us to work out a muscle we likely haven’t used in a long time, or ever.
If you are deeply itching to change your path, listen to it. Tune in, turn the lens inward and discover what it is that is making you curious. I can assure you that you will be able to run, walk, skip or jump once you get clear on which general direction you are leaping towards. The beauty here is, you get to choose whichever one feels safest to you!
Take small steps to work out that muscle and tune into the feelings that are arising. The hard truth is that taking the first step is the most challenging AND when you have gotten really specific and defined what you are climbing towards, the baby steps feel achievable and realistic versus doing it all at once. I don’t ever recommend that to any of my clients. I firmly believe and teach that building backwards is the most sustainable way to move forward with these big decisions.
Competition and comparison.
I believe that there is no real competition out there besides from within yourself. THANK GOODNESS that there are so many others in our collective doing something similar. You can use them as your expanders and inspiration, and heck, one day you may end up collaborating with them on a project. That’s the magique of building confidence in your leadership voice and owning it.
Comparing yourself to others is a VERY dangerous practice. It can very easily spiral you into insecurity and fear. I always recommend getting very protective of yourself and your vision during this time. Only intake information that is helpful for you and that is based on facts. In our world where technology has made marketing so much more accessible as well as shining the light into others’ worlds, we never see the full picture, just the bright parts. The reality is, making shifts in our life is challenging, it’s hard work, and nothing is built overnight. Do yourself a favor and take yourself off of social media and avoid oversharing with your friends and family. Do the research solo and then share when you are ready.
First, take inventory.
Use these journal prompts to get clear on which direction you may be leaping towards. My guidance is to not invite others into this process. As much as we love our support system, remember, change makes humans really uncomfortable. So your collective may try to talk you out of this leap because of their own fears. This process will teach you to trust yourself and make the next right move for you and then share it when you’re ready!
